As a child, Tonya was fond of watching the matriarchs of her family prepare meals on special occasions. Her fascination with food expanded and grew in Junior High School when she took her first cooking courses, and drove her to launch and operate a successful catering company for a decade. In addition to running the catering company, Tonya also worked in other service industries for 18 years.
Tonya began her restaurant career at Martick’s Restaurant and learned the ins and outs of the industry directly from Baltimore icon, Morris Martick. She went on to hold positions at the venerable Dogwood and Metropolitan Kitchen & Lounge in Annapolis. With that wealth of experience, she led the front of the house staff at the award-winning Herb & Soul alongside her husband, Chef David Thomas. Tonya and David have been working together as a team for almost 25 years. Tonya manages front of house, and is responsible for baked goods & desserts. They share a common bond for the love of food, family, cultural heritage, food sustainability and strengthening bonds in the community.
