Ancestor's Dinner: Gullah Geechee at The Table
We, at Ida B’s Table, are so excited to welcome Chef BJ Dennis for the first installment of Ancestor’s Dinner. Born and raised in Charleston, SC, personal chef and caterer Benjamin “BJ” Dennis infuses the flavors and culture of the Lowcountry into his Gullah Geechee cuisine, bringing a new taste to ever expanding culinary palate of the south. Chef Dennis is best known for his appearances on Top Chef and Moveable feast. Chef BJ and Chef David Thomas of Ida B’s Table are going to be taking over the kitchen and making a 5 course chef’s dinner focused on their ancestors.
Chef Dennis focuses on Gullah Geechee cuisine. The Gullah Geechee people are descended from the people of West and Central Africa. Different ethnic and social groups were brought together to the US as slaves along the East Coast stretching from Pender County, NC to St. John’s County, FL. Much like our mission at Ida B’s Table, Gullah food traditions focused on whatever they could get in the area. The food was available was a combination of European imports, items brought over from Africa during the slave trade, and the food introduced by the natives.
Food was usually scarce for the Gullah people, so, as a result, scraps were used. Nothing goes to waste. Communities would gather what scraps they had and have a meal together.
Join us at Ida B’s Table for a meal and conversation just like in Geechee communities. Five course meal with family style seating, you are not going to want to miss this night.
